Home rehab scheme launched for drug addicts

Quays NewsA FREE scheme has been launched which trains people how to help drug addicts kick their habits at home, writes Natasha Johansson.

The Manchester branch of Narconon hopes the pilot initiative will help tackle the growing drug problem by allowing people to care for their loved ones themselves.

The seminars aim to help addicts come off drugs without the need of replacement drugs such as methadone.

Ex-addict Peter Dwan is now a drug education lecturer.

He said:  “It’s a brand new thing for Manchester –all they’ve got to do is buy two books with all the information and then I’ll do the seminar for free.

“The reality of it is that only a small percentage of people can afford expensive withdrawal programmes. I’m putting a solution there and it’s going to put people in a better position.”

The cost of rehabilitation clinics can vary in price from £500 to £10,000 per week, meaning that for many addicts help is financially out of reach.

These costs mainly cover accommodation and medical treatment rather than psychological help.

Although free help from the NHS and social services can be obtained, waiting lists can be very long.

Peter said he hopes the idea, which had initial success in Australia, will be mirrored in other parts of the country.

He added:  “If it works then I think at grassroots level it will spread. I would like to see it take off really well because it’s a very effective solution to a problem.”

Although the charity is a not-for-profit organisation, the training is offered on a first come, first served basis and applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

Narconon plans to make sure the classes will remain affordable for everyone.

One of Narconon’s former students said: “I can now fill the rest of my life with confidence and knowledge.

"I am ready to take on my new role in society and make a real difference to all.”
